8 City owned facilities and over 8700 street and park lights have been retrofitted with energy efficient Induction Lighting saving taxpayers over $500,000 per year in energy costs and the environment over 1800 tons per year of CO2 emissions
The City of Antioch marked the completion of a $4.6 million lighting retrofit project with the installation of the final streetlight at 917 W 4th St on Thursday, December 16th at 10am.
Eight (8) City buildings have been retrofitted with energy efficient fluorescent lighting and over 8700 High Pressure Sodium (HPS) street, park and public parking lot lights with Induction Lighting. This project was coordinated by Honeywell and is one of the biggest projects of its type in the country. With tax exempt financing, the project will pay for itself over a ten (10) year period with Honeywell guaranteeing the annual energy savings. Additionally, maintenance costs are greatly reduced because induction lamps have an average rated service life of 100,000 hours (20 years) compared to the current HPS lighting which has an estimated service life of 20,000 hours (4 years).
The project is utilizing over $600,000 in Department of Energy- American Recovery & Reinvestment Act block grant funds. These funds were utilized to create job opportunities for local contractors. Other benefits of the project include:
Better quality lighting and increased lighting levels;
- 20% reduction in City greenhouse gas emissions;
- Budget neutral project with guaranteed savings and 10-year financing repayment period;
- 10-year guarantee on lighting parts.

The upgraded lights cast a white light, where the old streetlights had a yellow glow, if you notice yellow lights in your neighborhood or anywhere in the city, please contact Ken Warren at (925) 779-7035
